Ester Valerie Noronha (born 12 September 1992)[1] is an Indian actress, singer, composer, performer and classical dancer. Popularly known for her work in Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Konkani films and entertainment industries for more than a decade. Ester has won the Best Actress Award for her Konkani film SOPHIYA - a dream girl, Best Performance Award for Telugu Web Series Recce and Best Supporting Actress Award for her Kannada movie LANKE. Ester has worked in more than 35 films in around 7 languages including Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Telugu and Tamil till date. Her memorable works being Bheemavaram Bullodu (Telugu), Shakeela (Hindi), Lanke (Kannada), Sophiya (Konkani), Recce (Telugu) and many more. Her upcoming movie Thala in Telugu and Tamil languages will be releasing Worldwide on February 14th 2025.
Background
[edit]Ester Noronha was born to Mr. Valerian Noronha and Mrs. Janet Noronha in Bahrain. Due to the interest Ester showed in music and dance at a very young age, her mother gave up her career and came down to Mangalore along with Ester, where Ester continued her schooling and simultaneously pursued training in Piano, Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music and Guitar.
She debuted on the Konkani stage as "Baby Ester" at the tender age of 8 and became very popular as a child artist. She went on to perform in numerous shows locally and abroad, delivering several hits and participating in albums and shows of all the top composers and musicians in Konkani language.
Ester was brought up in Mangalore between the years 2000-2008. She attended St. Gerosa school, Jeppu, Mangalore between 3rd to 10th std during which she completed 8 grades in Piano from the Trinity college of London, Senior grade in Bharatanatyam from the KSEEB (Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board) and also performed the 'Arangetrum' or 'Rangapravesha' in Bharatanatyam. She completed the junior grade in Carnatic singing from the KSEEB and also performed the 'Arangetrum' or 'Rangapravesha' in the same.Ester is the first artist in Dakshina Kannada to have performed Rangapravesha in both Bharatnatyam and Carnatic singing. At the age of 14, she established her independent musical live show with the title "Ester Show" which was in aid of the Mangalore Diocesan Medical Relief Fund.
Ester was a bright student academically and passed the 10th std with a distinction. Due to her interest in the social sciences and her drive to do something for the society, she dreamed on getting into civil services. She along with her mother then shifted to Mumbai where she studied at the prestigious St. Xavier's college. She went on to Graduate in Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Psychology subjects. While in college she got trained in Hindustani singing under Ustad Hafiz Khan, Mumbai. She produced and released her maiden audio album in Konkani titled 'Ester's "Kalza Thaun" (from the heart) comprising 10 songs composed and sung by herself at the age of 16. It was during one of her Bharatnatyam shows in Bangalore, that the legendary Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan laid her eyes upon Ester. She went on to get trained in Kathak and Bollywood dancing under Saroj Khan for around 2 yrs during which she got introduced to the world of cinema. Ester then joined Anupam Kher's 'Actor Prepares', the school of acting where she completed her Diploma course in acting.
Personal Life
[edit]Ester Noronha is a Roman Catholic and traces her roots to the aristocratic family of the Noronha's of Portugal. Her paternal ancestors are said to be Portuguese / Goans who settled in Verna, Goa and eventually moved to Udupi, Karnataka. While her mother is a Mangalorean.
Ester married Indian singer and rapper Noel Sean in January 2019. They separated in February 2019 due to irreconcilable differences and filed for divorce in June 2019. The couple was granted the divorce in the Court of Law as well the Court of Church (Annulment) in August 2020.
Career
[edit]Initially hesitant about getting into films, Ester with her Guru Saroj Khan's guidance and advice debuted in a non- commercial Bollywood film "Baromas". The film went on to be played and nominated in various film festivals around the World including the 2012 South Asian International Film Festival in New York and the DCIFF (DC Independent Film Festival) in Washington, DC. It was the only Indian movie to be selected and competing in feature films category against films from USA, Switzerland, UK and Canada.
She was then cast by director Teja in his Telugu movie "1000 Abaddalu" in 2013 which went on to be a hit and Ester was immediately signed by the prestigious 'Suresh Productions' for their Golden jubilee project "Bhimavaram Bullodu" opposite Hero Sunil. The film went on to complete 50 successful days in theaters across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana thus making Ester Noronha popular and loved by the audience in the Telugu film industry (Tollywood). She has since worked in around 35 films in 7 Indian languages delivering several hits thus creating a niche of her own around the World.
