Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh
Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh

In Bangladeshi politics, the term Battle of Begums (Bengali: বেগমদের যুদ্ধ) refers to the political rivalry between Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League and Begum Khaleda Zia of the Nationalist Party.[1][2][3][4]

History

[edit]

The political rivalry between the Awami League and Nationalist Party dates back to pre-independence Bangladesh, and the controversy over who proclaimed the Independence of Bangladesh. According to some sources, it was Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,[5][6] the father of Sheikh Hasina, while to others it was Ziaur Rahman,[7] the husband of Khaleda Zia. There has been widespread violence due to this rivalry.[3]

Aftermath

[edit]

Use of the term declined as Sheikh Hasina remained in power after becoming Prime Minister once more in 2009, while Zia was placed under arrest. Hasina fled the nation on August 5, 2024 during the July Revolution,[3][8] and Zia was later freed.
