Birth and background

Anna Maria was born on 23 May 1593 in Kraków, Poland. Her parents' marriage was a political one, it was intended to tie the House of Vasa and the prestigious Habsburgs.[2]

As her younger brother Władysław, she was taken care of by her father's mistress, Urszula Meyerin (1570–1635), who was senior governess to the King's children and supervisor of Royal Nurses.[3][4]

In July 1593, Anna Maria was taken by her paternal aunt Anna Vasa of Sweden to her baptismal. Anna Maria's mother died on 10 February 1598 less than three years after giving birth to Władysław.[5] On 9 February 1600, Anna Maria died of Measles in Kraków. Her body was buried in the Wawel Cathedral.
