The Scouting Portal
Scouting is the activities of the Scout Movement, a youth movement using the Scout method which became popularly established in the first decade of the twentieth century. It follows a scheme of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking and sports. A widely recognized movement characteristic is the Scout uniform, by intent hiding all differences of social standing and encouraging equality, with neckerchief and campaign hat or comparable headwear. Distinctive insignia include the fleur-de-lis as well as merit badges or patches. In some countries, Girl Guides organizations, using a trefoil insignia, exist for girls to carry-out scout training.
Other programs for children who are too young to be Scouts and take the Scout Promise, such as Wolf Cubs or Cubs (launched in 1916), and for those who are too old to be Scouts, such as Rovers (launched in 1918), are sometimes associated with Scouts.
In 2007, there were over 38 million Scouts[dubious – discuss] and Guides in 216 countries. The Scout Movement is a pluralist movement, not a unitary organization. Numerous local, national and international Scout organizations have been formed. International organizations include: Order of World Scouts (formed 1911) World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM, formed 1922), World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS, formed 1928), originally and still primarily for girls-only organizations, World Federation of Independent Scouts, World Organization of Independent Scouts, International Union of Guides and Scouts of Europe, and Confederation of European Scouts. The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM /ˈwʊzəm/) is the largest and, after the Order of World Scouts (formed in 1911), is the second-oldest international organization in the Scout Movement, having been established in 1922. It has 176 members. These members are national scout organizations that founded WOSM or have subsequently been recognised by WOSM, which collectively have around 43 million participants. Its operational headquarters is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, although it is legally based in Geneva, Switzerland.
WOSM's current stated mission is "to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Scout Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society". (Full article...)

Olave St Clair Baden-Powell, Baroness Baden-Powell GBE (née Soames; 22 February 1889 – 25 June 1977) was the first Chief Guide for Britain and the wife of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell (the founder of Scouting and co-founder of Girl Guides).
Lady Baden-Powell became Chief Guide for Britain in 1918. Later the same year, at the Swanwick conference for Commissioners in October, she was presented with a gold Silver Fish, one of only two ever made. She was elected World Chief Guide in 1930. As well as making a major contribution to the development of the Guide/Girl Scout movements, she visited 111 countries during her life, attending Jamborees and national Guide and Scout associations. In 1932, she was created a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire by King George V. (Full article...)
